The Honourable Society of Lincoln's Inn At Central London

The historic buildings of Lincoln’s Inn are set in spacious, beautifully maintained private gardens right in the heart of Central London, providing a haven from the roar of traffic and crowded pavements. The Inn occupies most of the 11 acre rectangle formed by High Holborn on the north, the Royal Courts of Justice on the south, Chancery Lane on the east and Lincoln’s Inn Fields on the west.

The oldest of the four Inns of Court, the buildings and gardens of Lincoln’s Inn house an active, working society of barristers and judges, and law students and members alike have dined “in Hall” since 1490. The Halls and public rooms of Lincoln’s Inn are steeped in tradition and the most famous use of the Old Hall is as the opening scene of Charles Dickens’ novel Bleak House.

THE OLD HALL & CRYPT

The Old Hall is a fine example of beautifully maintained Tudor architecture and has many notable features including the wooden screen at the south end, designed by Inigo Jones, and Hogarth’s painting of “Paul before Felix” on the North wall.

The Crypt beneath the Old Hall was for centuries used for storage of fuel, food and wine. Now the brick groin vaulting has been restored to its former glory and is used as a reception area.

(available to hire weekdays daytime and evenings and weekends)

THE OLD COURT ROOM

The Old Court Room was originally an extension to the Library of Lincoln’s Inn, built in 1845. The Library became the largest law library in the English-speaking world, and the Old Court Room was used for court sittings, hence its name.

THE GREAT HALL

Opened by Queen Victoria in 1845, The Great Hall is the largest hall of any of the Inns and is considered to be one of the most distinguished buildings designed by Philip Hardwick working in the Tudor Revival style. On the North Wall is a huge and magnificent fresco executed by G.F. Watts, the Pre-Raphaelite painter, showing the world’s law givers from Moses to Edward I.

(available to hire weekday evenings only and weekends)

THE MEMBERS COMMON ROOM

The Members Common Room was created from the vaulted ceiling of the Victorian kitchen below and has been refurbished to a high standard. It is located on the ground of the Great Hall and benefits from beautiful views of the Inn’s garden. It also has an outside space ideal for functions al fresco.

(available to hire weekends only)
